Ever have an AH-HA moment in the bathroom?

On Saturday morning, I was staring out the bathroom window, minding my business, when a thought came to me:

You're not trying to redefine the meaning of success - you're expanding it.

Good thing I was already sitting down because this nearly knocked me off of my feet.

I think this was brewing inside my brain ever since I listened to a recent episode of Brene Brown's Dare to Lead podcast. Her guest, Dr. Sarah Lewis, said that "Mastery, a word we don’t use often, is not the equivalent of what we might consider its cognate – perfectionism - an inhumane aim, motivated by a concern of how others view us."

Inhumane aim. Dr. Lewis did not pull any punches and I'm living for it. So this month, I'm reading her book, The Rise, to learn how failure, innovation, and grit guides us on the road to mastery. But let's be clear - mastery is not the same as success; Dr. Lewis describes success as "an event-based victory based on a peak point, a punctuated moment in time," while mastery requires "endurance" and more than a "commitment to a goal." And this is all within the first ten pages of her book!

We constantly talk about success, but we rarely mention mastery. Our society idolizes the goal and the end result more than the process which can lead to the feelings of disappointment and not doing enough.

I can't wait to learn how to fall in love with the process. Join me by reading The Rise this month and follow me on Instagram @heyms.lee where I share pro-tips on how to protect your energy by posting videos of myself that will probably embarrass anyone who knows me.
